Srimad Valmiki Ramayana
तम् उवाच किम् अर्थम् त्वम् आगतो अपास्य मैथिलीम् ।
यदा सा तव विश्वासात् वने विहरिता मया ॥३-५९-२॥
tam uvāca kim artham tvam āgato apāsya maithilīm |
yadā sā tava viśvāsāt vane viharitā mayā ॥3-59-2॥
Translation
He said to him: "For what purpose have you come, leaving Maithili behind, when she was left in the forest by me trusting in you?"
हिंदी अनुवाद
उन्होंने (राम ने) लक्ष्मण से कहा: "तुम मैथिली (सीता) को छोड़कर किस प्रयोजन से यहाँ आए हो? जबकि मैंने तुम्हारे ही भरोसे (विश्वास पर) उसे वन में छोड़ा था।"
English Commentary
Rama confronts Lakshmana with the weight of responsibility. The phrase 'tava vishvasat' (relying on your trustworthiness) is a heavy blow to Lakshmana. Rama implies that he felt secure leaving Sita only because Lakshmana was there. By leaving her, the primary security protocol—Lakshmana's presence—was breached. Rama questions the 'artham' (purpose) of his arrival, suggesting that no purpose could justify abandoning the sacred trust of protecting Maithili in such a dangerous environment.

श्रीराम यहाँ लक्ष्मण को उनके दायित्व का स्मरण करा रहे हैं। 'तव विश्वासात्' (तुम्हारे विश्वास पर) वाक्यांश लक्ष्मण के लिए अत्यंत वेदनापूर्ण है। राम यह कह रहे हैं कि सीता की सुरक्षा का आधार लक्ष्मण की उपस्थिति थी। 'विहरिता' का अर्थ है 'रखी गई' या 'सौंपी गई'।
