रिपुः प्रच्छन्न चारी त्वम् मत् अर्थम् अनुगच्छसि ।
राघवस्य अन्तर प्रेप्सुः तथा एनम् न अभिपद्यसे ॥ ॥३-५९-१९॥
Ripuḥ pracchanna cārī tvam mat artham anugacchasi । Rāghavasya antara prepsuḥ tathā enam na abhipadyase ॥ ॥3-59-19॥
Translation
"You are a disguised enemy wandering with us for my sake. Desiring to find a vulnerability (or end) of Raghava, you do not go to his rescue."
हिंदी अनुवाद
"तुम प्रच्छन्न (छिपे हुए) शत्रु हो जो मेरे लिए (मुझे पाने के लिए) पीछे लगे हो। तुम राघव (राम) के छिद्र (संकट/मृत्यु) की प्रतीक्षा कर रहे हो, इसीलिए उनकी सहायता को नहीं जा रहे हो।"
English Commentary
Sita delivers the final verdict: Lakshmana is a Ripuḥ pracchanna cārī—an enemy in disguise. She reiterates that his devotion is a mask for his desire to possess her (mat artham). She accuses him of being an opportunist (antara prepsuḥ), waiting for a gap in Rama’s armor or his death to execute his plan. By framing his protective presence as a predatory stalk, Sita dismantles the foundation of their relationship. This verse is crucial because it makes it morally impossible for Lakshmana to stay; staying would imply he validates her accusations of lust, while leaving proves his obedience to her command, albeit at the cost of her safety.

सीता के क्रोध और भय का यह चरम है। वे लक्ष्मण को 'रिपुः प्रच्छन्न चारी' (वेष बदला हुआ शत्रु) कहती हैं। वे पुनः दोहराती हैं कि लक्ष्मण का वन में आने का एकमात्र उद्देश्य 'मत् अर्थम्' (मेरे लिए/मुझे पाने के लिए) है। 'अन्तर प्रेप्सुः' का अर्थ है अवसर की तलाश करने वाला—अर्थात् लक्ष्मण राम के संकट में पड़ने का ही इंतजार कर रहे थे। यह अपमान की पराकाष्ठा है। लक्ष्मण के लिए अब वहाँ रुकना और सीता की रक्षा करना, उनकी आज्ञा का उल्लंघन करना होगा। इन वचनों ने लक्ष्मण को धर्मसंकट से निकालकर विवशता की स्थिति में डाल दिया।
