Srimad Valmiki Ramayana
एवम् ब्रुवाणम् सौमित्रिम् रामः संताप मोहितः ।
अब्रवीत् दुष्कृतम् सौम्य ताम् विना यत् त्वम् आगतः ॥ ॥३-५९-२१॥
Evam bruvāṇam saumitrim rāmaḥ saṃtāpa mohitaḥ । Abravīt duṣkṛtam saumya tām vinā yat tvam āgataḥ ॥ ॥3-59-21॥
Translation
To Sumitra’s son (Lakshmana), who was speaking thus (explaining himself), Rama, bewildered by anxiety, said: "O gentle one, you have done a wrong deed by coming here, leaving her without protection."
हिंदी अनुवाद
(राम से मिलन होने पर) इस प्रकार कहते हुए (अपनी सफाई देते हुए) सुमित्रानंदन लक्ष्मण से, संताप से व्याकुल राम ने कहा— "हे सौम्य! तुमने सीता को अकेली छोड़कर जो यहाँ चले आए, यह बहुत अनुचित (दुष्कृत) किया।"
English Commentary
The scene shifts to the meeting between the brothers. Rama is described as saṃtāpa mohitaḥ (bewildered by anguish/grief), anticipating the disaster. Even as Lakshmana tries to explain the circumstances (evam bruvāṇam), Rama interrupts with a verdict: duṣkṛtam (a bad deed/wrong action). Rama chastises Lakshmana for leaving Sita alone. The use of the address Saumya (gentle one) indicates that Rama blames the judgment, not the intent, but he remains firm that leaving Sita unprotected in a demon-infested forest, regardless of the provocation, was a catastrophic failure of duty.

दृश्य परिवर्तित होता है। राम और लक्ष्मण का मिलन होता है। राम 'संताप मोहित' हैं—उन्हें अपशकुन और मारीच की आवाज के कारण अनहोनी का आभास हो चुका है। लक्ष्मण जब अपनी स्थिति स्पष्ट करने का प्रयास करते हैं, तो राम उसे तुरंत खारिज कर देते हैं। राम स्पष्ट कहते हैं कि लक्ष्मण का कार्य 'दुष्कृतम्' (गलत/पापपूर्ण) है। राम 'सौम्य' शब्द का प्रयोग करते हैं, जो दर्शाता है कि क्रोध के बावजूद भाई के प्रति उनका स्नेह बना हुआ है, परंतु वे लक्ष्मण के निर्णय की कड़ी आलोचना करते हैं। राम के लिए पत्नी की सुरक्षा का कर्तव्य, किसी भी भावनात्मक प्रहार से बड़ा है।
