त्वाम् आसाद्य महात्मानम् धर्मज्ञम् धर्म वत्सलम् ।
अर्थित्वात् नाथ वक्ष्यामः तत् च नः क्षन्तुम् अर्हसि ॥ ॥३-६-१०॥
tvām āsādya mahātmānam dharmajñam dharma vatsalam । arthitvāt nātha vakṣyāmaḥ tat ca naḥ kṣantum arhasi ॥ ॥3-6-10॥
Translation
Having approached you, O Lord, who are a great soul, knower of Dharma, and lover of Dharma, we shall speak as petitioners. For this, you ought to forgive us.
हिंदी अनुवाद
हे नाथ! आप जैसे महात्मा, धर्मज्ञ और धर्मवत्सल (राजा) को पाकर, हम याचक (अर्थी) होने के नाते कुछ कहेंगे; उसके लिए आप हमें क्षमा करें।
English Commentary
This verse displays the profound etiquette of the sages. Traditionally, sages are spiritually superior to kings and give commands, not petitions. However, by positioning themselves as arthitvāt (petitioners/seekers of help), they invert the social hierarchy out of necessity. The phrase kṣantum arhasi (you ought to forgive us) indicates their hesitation in troubling Rama, who is himself in exile. They are aware they are about to ask him to perform a royal duty (warfare) while he is leading an ascetic life, hence the preliminary request for pardon.

यह श्लोक ऋषियों की विनम्रता और शिष्टाचार का परिचायक है। ऋषि तपस्या के धनी होने के कारण राजा से भी श्रेष्ठ माने जाते हैं, उन्हें आज्ञा देनी चाहिए, याचना नहीं करनी चाहिए। परन्तु यहाँ वे 'अर्थित्वात्' (याचक होने के नाते) कह रहे हैं और 'क्षन्तुम् अर्हसि' (क्षमा करें) कहकर संकोच व्यक्त कर रहे हैं। वे जानते हैं कि वे राम को एक कठिन कर्तव्य सौंपने जा रहे हैं जो शायद उनकी वनवास की प्रतिज्ञा (तपस्वी वेश) के साथ संघर्ष कर सकता है, इसलिए वे पहले ही इस धृष्टता के लिए क्षमा मांग लेते हैं।
