Srimad Valmiki Ramayana
प्राप्नोति शाश्वतीम् राम कीर्तिम् स बहु वार्षिकीम् ।
ब्रह्मणः स्थानम् आसाद्य तत्र च अपि महीयते ॥ ॥३-६-१३॥
prāpnoti śāśvatīm rāma kīrtim sa bahu vārṣikīm । brahmaṇaḥ sthānam āsādya tatra ca api mahīyate ॥ ॥3-6-13॥
Translation
O Rama! He (such a king) attains eternal fame lasting for many years, and having reached the abode of Brahma, is glorified there as well.
हिंदी अनुवाद
हे राम! (प्रजा की रक्षा करने वाला राजा) बहुत वर्षों तक रहने वाली शाश्वत कीर्ति प्राप्त करता है और (मृत्यु के पश्चात) ब्रह्मलोक को प्राप्त होकर वहाँ भी महिमान्वित होता है।
English Commentary
The sages combine moral instruction with spiritual incentive. For a Kshatriya, the dual goals are fame (kirti) in this world and liberation in the next. The sages assure Rama that protecting ascetics in the forest yields the highest rewards. Shasvatim kirtim promises historical immortality. By stating that such a king attains Brahmana sthanam (the abode of Brahma), they equate the active discharge of royal duty (Rajadharma) with the passive, rigorous asceticism of the sages—both lead to the same divine destination.

यहाँ ऋषियों ने 'Preaching' (उपदेश) के साथ 'Incentive' (प्रलोभन) भी जोड़ा है। क्षत्रिय के लिए दो ही लक्ष्य होते हैं—इस लोक में 'कीर्ति' (यश) और परलोक में 'सद्गति'। ऋषि आश्वासन दे रहे हैं कि वन में ऋषियों की रक्षा करना अयोध्या में राज करने से कम फलदायी नहीं है। 'शाश्वतीम् कीर्तिम्' का अर्थ है इतिहास में अमर हो जाना। 'ब्रह्मणः स्थानम्' (ब्रह्मलोक) की प्राप्ति यह दर्शाती है कि प्रजा-पालन रूपी राजधर्म का फल भी वही है जो ऋषियों की कठिन तपस्या का है।
