पंपा नदी निवासानाम् अनुमन्दाकिनीम् अपि ।
चित्रकूट आलयानाम् च क्रियते कदनम् महत् ॥ ॥३-६-१७॥
paṃpā nadī nivāsānām anumandākinīm api । citrakūṭa ālayānām ca kriyate kadanam mahat ॥ ॥3-6-17॥
Translation
A great slaughter is being perpetrated upon the sages dwelling by the Pampa river, those living along the Mandakini, and those residing in Chitrakoot.

पंपा नदी के तट पर रहने वाले, मंदाकिनी नदी के पास रहने वाले और चित्रकूट निवासी मुनियों का (राक्षसों द्वारा) भारी संहार किया जा रहा है।
English Commentary
This verse maps the geography of the terror. It spans from Chitrakoot (where Rama is currently based) down to the Pampa river and Mandakini. This indicates that the Rakshasa threat is not localized but pervasive throughout the Dandakaranya forest region. By naming these distant landmarks, the sages demonstrate that the sanctuary of the forest has been completely violated. Kadanam mahat (great slaughter) confirms that this is a systematic purge of the ascetic community, not isolated incidents of violence.

यह श्लोक राक्षसों के आतंक के भौगोलिक विस्तार (Geography of Terror) को बताता है। चित्रकूट (जहाँ राम अभी हैं) से लेकर दक्षिण में पंपा सरोवर (जहाँ बाद में सुग्रीव से मिलेंगे) तक का पूरा क्षेत्र असुरक्षित है। यह एक बहुत बड़ा भू-भाग है। इससे पता चलता है कि राक्षसों का नेटवर्क कितना विस्तृत हो चुका है। 'कदनम् महत्' (महान संहार) शब्द बताता है कि यह छिटपुट घटनाएं नहीं हैं, बल्कि यह एक सुनियोजित नरसंहार (Massacre) है जिसे रोकना अब अनिवार्य है।
