Srimad Valmiki Ramayana
ततः त्वाम् शरणार्थम् च शरण्यम् समुपस्थिताः ।
परिपालय नः राम वध्यमानान् निशाचरैः ॥ ॥३-६-१९॥
Tataḥ tvām śaraṇārtham ca śaraṇyam samupasthitāḥ |
Paripālaya naḥ rāma vadhyamānān niśācaraiḥ ॥3-6-19॥
Translation
Therefore, O Rama, we have approached you, who are the ultimate refuge, seeking protection. Please protect us, who are being persecuted by the night-wandering demons (Nishacharas).
हिंदी अनुवाद
हे राम! आप शरण देने में समर्थ हैं, इसीलिए हम शरणार्थी बनकर आपके पास आए हैं। निशाचरों (राक्षसों) द्वारा सताए जाते हुए हम ऋषियों की आप रक्षा करें।
English Commentary
This verse encapsulates the doctrine of Sharanyagati (total surrender). The sages address Rama as Sharanyam, the one capable of affording shelter. By using the term Vadhyamanan (being killed/persecuted), they highlight the urgency of their plight. It establishes the spiritual relationship where the devotee (the sages) acknowledges their helplessness and relies entirely on the power of the Lord (Rama) for protection. It also sets the stage for Rama’s intervention, framing his subsequent actions not as aggression, but as the fulfillment of his duty to protect the righteous.

इस श्लोक में ऋषियों की दीनता और श्रीराम के प्रति उनकी पूर्ण शरणागति का भाव व्यक्त हुआ है। 'शरण्यम्' शब्द का अर्थ है 'जो शरण देने योग्य हो' या 'जिसमें शरण लेने की क्षमता हो'। ऋषि जानते हैं कि केवल श्रीराम ही उन्हें राक्षसी आतंक से मुक्त करा सकते हैं। यहाँ 'वध्यमानान्' शब्द का प्रयोग यह दर्शाता है कि राक्षसों द्वारा ऋषियों की हत्याएं निरंतर हो रही थीं, और स्थिति अत्यंत संकटपूर्ण थी। यह श्लोक क्षत्रिय धर्म के उस पहलू को उजागर करता है जहाँ 'आर्तत्राण' (पीड़ित की रक्षा) राजा का परम कर्तव्य माना गया है।
