यत्नात् मृगयमाणः तु न आससाद वने प्रियाम् ।
शोक रक्त ईक्षणः श्रीमान् उन्मत्त इव लक्ष्यते ॥ ॥३-६०-१०॥
Yatnāt mṛgayamāṇaḥ tu na āsasāda vane priyām |
Śoka rakta īkṣaṇaḥ śrīmān unmatta iva lakṣyate ॥3-60-10॥
Translation
Though searching with great effort in the forest, he did not find his beloved. With eyes red from grief, the glorious Rama appeared like a madman.

वन में बहुत प्रयत्नपूर्वक खोजने पर भी जब वे अपनी प्रिया को न पा सके, तो शोक से लाल नेत्रों वाले श्रीमान (राम) पागल (उन्मत्त) से प्रतीत होने लगे।
English Commentary
This verse marks the transition of Rama from a worried husband to a desperate lover bordering on madness ('unmatta'). The phrase 'śoka rakta īkṣaṇaḥ' (eyes red with grief) vividly captures the physical toll of his anguish—indicative of incessant weeping and sleepless agitation. Valmiki deliberately uses the honorific 'śrīmān' (the glorious/majestic one) to create a striking contrast: the Prince who is usually the epitome of composure and dignity now wanders looking disheveled and mentally unhinged. This is the onset of the Unmada state in Indian aesthetics, a stage of intense separation anxiety where the lover loses touch with reality.

यह श्लोक श्रीराम की मानसिक स्थिति के संक्रमण को दर्शाता है। अब तक वे केवल चिंतित थे, लेकिन सीता को न पाकर अब वे 'उन्मत्त' (पागलपन) की अवस्था की ओर बढ़ रहे हैं। 'शोक रक्त ईक्षणः' (शोक से लाल आंखें) अत्यधिक रोने और मानसिक संताप का शारीरिक लक्षण है। वाल्मीकि जी ने यहाँ 'श्रीमान्' विशेषण का प्रयोग जानबूझकर किया है—यह विरोधाभास दिखाने के लिए कि जो मर्यादा और शोभा के धाम हैं, वे आज वियोग में अपनी सुध-बुध खो बैठे हैं। यह प्रेमोन्माद की चरम सीमा है जहाँ नायक को अपने परिवेश का सामान्य ज्ञान नहीं रहता।
