ककुभः ककुभ ऊरुम् ताम् व्यक्तम् जानाति मैथिलीम् ।
लता पल्लव पुष्प आढ्यो भाति हि एष वनस्पतिः ॥ ॥३-६०-१५॥
Kakubhaḥ kakubha ūrum tām vyaktam jānāti maithilīm |
Latā pallava puṣpa āḍhyo bhāti hi eṣa vanaspatiḥ ॥3-60-15॥
Translation
This Kakubha tree surely knows Maithili, whose thighs resemble the Kakubha trunk; for this tree appears splendid, rich with creepers, leaves, and flowers.
हिंदी अनुवाद
यह ककुभ का वृक्ष उस मैथिली को निश्चित रूप से जानता होगा, जिसकी जंघाएं ककुभ के तने के समान हैं; क्योंकि यह वनस्पति लताओं, पत्तों और फूलों से लदा हुआ सुशोभित हो रहा है।
English Commentary
Rama is convinced that the Kakubha tree possesses knowledge of Sita. He employs the comparison 'kakubha ūrum' (thighs like the Kakubha trunk)—a standard aesthetic comparison in Sanskrit literature for smooth, round thighs. Rama’s logic is associative: because part of her resembles the tree, the tree must recognize her ('vyaktam jānāti'). Seeing the tree lush with leaves and flowers, Rama interprets its vibrancy as a sign of awareness or perhaps complicity, thinking it stands there happily while he suffers. He projects human qualities of recognition onto the tree based on physical resemblance.

श्रीराम 'ककुभ' (अर्जुन की ही एक प्रजाति) वृक्ष को संबोधित करते हैं। वे कहते हैं कि यह वृक्ष 'व्यक्तम् जानाति' (स्पष्ट रूप से जानता है)। क्यों? क्योंकि सीता की जंघाएं (thighs) ककुभ के चिकने तने के समान सुंदर हैं (शास्त्रीय उपमान)। श्रीराम को लगता है कि समानता के कारण वृक्ष का सीता से एक गुप्त संबंध है। वृक्ष का लताओं और फूलों से लदा होना ('लता पल्लव पुष्प आढ्यो') श्रीराम को ऐसा प्रतीत होता है मानो वृक्ष प्रसन्न है, और शायद उसने सीता को देखा है या छिपा रखा है। यह वियोगी की मानसिक दशा है जहाँ वह प्रकृति की सुंदरता में भी संकेत खोजता है।
