Srimad Valmiki Ramayana
न एव सा नूनम् अथवा हिंसिता चारु हासिनी ।
कृच्छ्रम् प्राप्तम् न माम् नूनम् यथा उपेक्षितुम् अर्हति ॥ ॥३-६०-२९॥
Na eva sā nūnam athavā hiṃsitā cāru hāsinī |
Kṛcchram prāptam na mām nūnam yathā upekṣitum arhati ॥3-60-29॥
Translation
Or surely, she is not here, or that sweet-smiling one has been killed. Surely, she would not deserve to ignore me [while I am] in such distress.
हिंदी अनुवाद
(भ्रम टूटने पर) अथवा, निश्चय ही वह यहाँ नहीं है, या फिर वह मधुर मुस्कान वाली (चारु हासिनी) मार डाली गई है। अन्यथा, वह मुझे इस प्रकार कष्ट में देखकर निश्चित ही मेरी उपेक्षा नहीं करती।
English Commentary
Logic pierces through Rama’s madness. He realizes that if Sita were alive and free, she would never ignore his krichchram (misery/difficulty). Her silence confirms his worst fear: she must be dead or abducted (himsita). He bases this conclusion on her character; her love for him prevents her from being indifferent to his pain. The sweet smile (charu hasini) he recalls contrasts sharply with the violent fate he now suspects.

यहाँ राम का भ्रम टूटता है और कठोर सत्य सामने आता है। वे तर्क करते हैं कि सीता उन्हें कष्ट में देखकर छिप नहीं सकतीं। यदि वह उत्तर नहीं दे रही हैं, तो इसका अर्थ है—'हिंसिता' (वह मारी गई हैं या हिंसक जीवों द्वारा पकड़ ली गई हैं)। 'चारु हासिनी' (सुंदर हंसी वाली) विशेषण का प्रयोग करके वे उस मुस्कान को याद करते हैं जो अब लुप्त हो चुकी है। यह श्लोक आशा से निराशा की ओर संक्रमण (transition) है।
