हृता मृता वा नष्टा वा भक्षिता वा भविष्यति ।
निलीना अपि अथवा भीरुः अथवा वनम् आश्रिता ॥ ॥३-६०-८॥
Hṛtā mṛtā vā naṣṭā vā bhakṣitā vā bhaviṣyati |
Nilīnā api athavā bhīruḥ athavā vanam āśritā ॥3-60-8॥
Translation
(Rama thought) Has she been abducted? Is she dead? Or lost? Or has she been eaten? Or is the timid one hiding somewhere? Or has she gone into the forest?

(श्रीराम सोचने लगे) क्या उसे हर लिया गया? या वह मर गई? या कहीं खो गई? या उसे (राक्षसों ने) खा लिया? अथवा वह डरपोक (भीरु) कहीं छिपी हुई है? या वन में कहीं गयी है?
English Commentary
This verse perfectly encapsulates the racing, anxious mind of Rama. He cycles through a gamut of terrifying possibilities mixed with desperate hope. He fears the worst: 'hṛtā' (abducted), 'mṛtā' (dead), or 'bhakṣitā' (eaten by demons). However, the human heart struggles to accept such finality immediately. Thus, he alternates these dark thoughts with hopeful speculations: perhaps she is merely 'nilīnā' (hiding) out of playfulness or fear, or simply 'vanam āśritā' (wandered into the forest). Addressing her as 'bhīruḥ' (timid one) is affectionate; he knows she gets scared easily, which supports his hope that she might just be hiding from the scary noises she heard earlier.

घोर निराशा में श्रीराम का मन विभिन्न संभावनाओं के बीच झूल रहा है। वे सबसे बुरे परिणामों की कल्पना करते हैं—'हृता' (अपहरण), 'मृता' (मृत्यु), 'भक्षिता' (राक्षसों द्वारा भक्षण)। फिर अगले ही क्षण, उनका मन खुद को सांत्वना देने के लिए कम भयानक विकल्प तलाशता है। वे सोचते हैं, शायद वह 'भीरुः' (डरने वाली सीता) राक्षसों के डर से कहीं 'निलीना' (छिपी हुई) हो। यह श्लोक एक व्यथित मन की 'वितर्क' अवस्था को दर्शाता है, जहाँ आशा और निराशा का द्वंद्व चलता है। वे तार्किक रूप से जानते हैं कि खतरा है, फिर भी प्रेमवश यह मानना चाहते हैं कि वह शायद खेल कर रही हो या छिपी हो।
