Srimad Valmiki Ramayana
सरितम् वा अपि संप्राप्ता मीन वंजुल सेविताम् ।
वित्रासयितु कामा वा लीना स्यात् कानने क्वचित् ॥३-६१-१६॥
Saritam vā api saṃprāptā mīna vañjula sevitām |
Vitrāsayitu kāmā vā līnā syāt kānane kvacit ॥3-61-16॥
Translation
"Or perhaps she has gone to the river, frequented by fish and Vanjula trees. Or, wishing to scare [tease] you, she might be hiding somewhere in the forest."
हिंदी अनुवाद
"अथवा वे मछलियों और वंजुल (बेंत/अशोक) के वृक्षों से युक्त नदी पर गई होंगी। या फिर, हे राम! तुम्हें डराने (मजाक करने) की इच्छा से वे वन में कहीं छिपी हो सकती हैं।"
English Commentary
Lakshmana continues to list innocuous possibilities. He suggests she might be at the river or, validating Rama's earlier hope, simply hiding to tease him (vitrasayitu kama - wishing to startle/scare playfully). By engaging with Rama’s earlier hallucination that she was hiding behind a tree, Lakshmana validates Rama's feelings while pivoting them towards a hopeful search rather than a mournful conclusion.

लक्ष्मण 'परिहास' (मजाक) की संभावना को भी बल देते हैं। 'वित्रासयितु कामा' का अर्थ है 'डराने की इच्छा रखने वाली'—जैसे प्रियजन छिपकर अचानक सामने आकर दूसरे को चौंका देते हैं। यद्यपि लक्ष्मण भी जानते हैं कि स्थिति गंभीर है, फिर भी वे राम को शांत करने के लिए 'विप्रलम्भ' के सुखद पहलुओं (जैसे लुका-छिपी) की याद दिलाते हैं ताकि राम का मानसिक संतुलन बना रहे।
