Srimad Valmiki Ramayana
कुशलम् परिपृच्छन्तम् कथम् शक्षे निरीक्षितुम् ।
विदेह रजो नूनम् माम् दृष्ट्वा विरहितम् तया ॥ ॥३-६२-१३॥
Kuśalam paripṛcchantam katham śakṣe nirīkṣitum |
Videha rajo nūnam mām dṛṣṭvā virahitam tayā ॥3-62-13॥
Translation
"When the King of Videha (Janaka) asks after our welfare and sees me without her, how indeed will I be able to look him in the eye?"
हिंदी अनुवाद
"जब विदेहराज (जनक) मुझसे कुशल-क्षेम पूछेंगे और मुझे उस (सीता) के बिना देखेंगे, तब मैं उनके सामने कैसे देख सकूँगा?"
English Commentary
This verse highlights Rama's intense guilt and sense of accountability. King Janaka had entrusted his beloved daughter to Rama's protection. The rhetorical question "How will I be able to look him in the eye?" reveals Rama's crushing shame. In the cultural context, returning to a father-in-law after failing to protect his daughter is the ultimate disgrace for a warrior husband. Rama fears the confrontation with Janaka not out of fear of punishment, but out of empathy for the pain his failure will cause the old king.

राम का संकोच और लज्जा यहाँ व्यक्त होती है। राजा जनक ने अपनी पुत्री सीता, जो उन्हें प्राणों से भी प्यारी थी, राम के संरक्षण में दी थी। 'कथम् शक्षे निरीक्षितुम्' (मैं कैसे देख सकूँगा?) प्रश्न राम के अपराध-बोध (guilt) को दर्शाता है। वे स्वयं को जनक के विश्वास का घातक मान रहे हैं। एक दामाद के लिए ससुर के सामने अपनी पत्नी की सुरक्षा में विफल होकर जाना, तत्कालीन समाज में अत्यंत अपमानजनक स्थिति थी। राम को अपने दुःख से अधिक जनक के संभावित दुःख की चिंता है।
