त्वम् अशोकस्य शाखाभिः पुष्प प्रिय तराअ प्रिये ।
अवृणोषि शरीरम् ते मम शोक विवर्धिनी ॥ ॥३-६२-३॥
Tvam aśokasya śākhābhiḥ puṣpa priya tarā priye |
Avṛṇoṣi śarīram te mama śoka vivardhinī ॥3-62-3॥
Translation
"O Beloved! You, who are fond of flowers, are covering your body with the branches of the Ashoka tree, thereby increasing my grief."

"हे प्रिये! तुम तो फूलों को अत्यधिक पसंद करती हो। तुम अशोक वृक्ष की शाखाओं से अपने शरीर को ढक रही हो (छिपा रही हो), और इस प्रकार मेरे शोक को बढ़ा रही हो।"
English Commentary
Rama addresses the Ashoka tree, engaging in a poignant wordplay. Ashoka literally means "without sorrow," yet Rama claims that by hiding behind it, Sita is acting as shoka vivardhinī (increaser of grief). He hallucinates that Sita, knowing her love for flowers, is playfully hiding behind the branches. This represents the psychological stage of denial; his mind refuses to accept her absence and constructs a scenario where she is merely playing a game of hide-and-seek.

राम यहाँ अशोक वृक्ष को संबोधित कर रहे हैं। यहाँ एक मार्मिक शब्द-क्रीड़ा है: 'अशोक' का अर्थ है 'जो शोक न दे', किन्तु राम कहते हैं कि सीता अशोक के पीछे छिपकर उनके 'शोक' को बढ़ा रही हैं ('शोक विवर्धिनी')। राम को भ्रम है कि सीता उनके साथ खेल (परिहास) कर रही हैं और जानबूझकर वृक्ष के पीछे छिपी हैं। यह अस्वीकरण (denial) की अवस्था है, जहाँ मन यह मानने को तैयार नहीं कि प्रियजन खो गया है; वह उसे आस-पास ही खोजना चाहता है।
