अस्मिन् मया सार्थम् उदार शीला शिला तले पूर्वम् उपोपविष्टा ।
कान्त स्मिता लक्ष्मण जात हासा त्वाम् आह सीता बहु वाक्य जातम् ॥ ॥३-६३-१२॥
Asmin mayā sārtham udāra śīlā śilā talē pūrvam upōpaviṣṭā । kānta smitā lakṣmaṇa jāta hāsā tvām āha sītā bahu vākya jātam ॥ ॥3-63-12॥
Translation
O Lakshmana! That lady of noble character used to sit right here on this rock slab with me in the past. With a gentle smile and occasional laughter, she used to speak many words to you.
हिंदी अनुवाद
हे लक्ष्मण! वह उदार स्वभाव वाली सीता पहले मेरे साथ इसी शिला-तल (पत्थर की चट्टान) पर बैठा करती थी। मंद-मंद मुस्कुराती हुई और कभी-कभी हँसती हुई, वह तुमसे बहुत सी बातें किया करती थी।
English Commentary
Rama shifts from terrifying imaginations to a specific, painful memory triggered by the landscape. He points to a specific rock slab (shila tale) where they used to sit together. This verse humanizes their exile; it wasn't all hardship—there were moments of laughter (jata hasa) and conversation. Rama highlights Sita’s relationship with Lakshmana here, recalling how she used to chat playfully with him. By remembering her "noble character" (udara shila) and her smiles, Rama contrasts the vibrant, happy past of that physical space with its current emptiness. It emphasizes that Sita was the center of their social interaction; without her, the bond between the brothers is steeped in silence and mourning.

अब श्री राम का ध्यान वर्तमान की विभीषिका से हटकर अतीत की मधुर स्मृतियों की ओर जाता है। वे उस स्थान (शिला-तल) को देखते हैं जहाँ वे तीनों साथ बैठते थे। यह 'स्मृति' नामक संचारी भाव है। राम याद करते हैं कि सीता का स्वभाव कितना 'उदार' था और वह लक्ष्मण से कितना स्नेह करती थी (मातृवत)। 'कान्त स्मिता' (सुंदर मुस्कान) और 'जात हासा' (हंसी) का स्मरण करके राम वर्तमान सन्नाटे को और अधिक गहरा महसूस करते हैं। पहले वह स्थान हंसी और बातों से गूंजता था, अब वहां केवल शून्यता है। सीता का लक्ष्मण से बात करना यह दर्शाता है कि वह वनवास में भी प्रसन्न थी और परिवार को जोड़े रखती थी। यह सुखद स्मृति वर्तमान दुःख को और बढ़ा देती है।
