Srimad Valmiki Ramayana
पद्म आनना पद्म पलाश नेत्रा पद्मानि वा आनेतुम् अभिप्रयाता ।
तत् अपि अयुक्तम् न हि सा कद्दचित् मया विना गच्छति पंकजानि ॥ ॥३-६३-१४॥
Padma ānanā padma palāśa nētrā padmāni vā ānētum abhiprayātā । tat api ayuktam na hi sā kadācit mayā vinā gacchati paṅkajāni ॥ ॥3-63-14॥
Translation
Did that lotus-faced lady with eyes like lotus petals go to fetch lotuses? But that too is not logical, for she never goes to gather lotuses without me.
हिंदी अनुवाद
वह कमल-मुखी और कमल की पंखुड़ियों के समान नेत्रों वाली सीता क्या कमल लाने के लिए गयी है? (फिर सोचते हैं) यह भी संभव नहीं (अयुक्त) है, क्योंकि वह मेरे बिना कभी कमल लेने नहीं जाती।
English Commentary
Rama continues his desperate search for a plausible explanation, using beautiful floral imagery. He describes Sita as Padma-anana (lotus-faced) and Padma-palasha-netra (eyes like lotus petals), wondering if her affinity for lotuses led her to the pond to gather them. The poetic connection is that the "lotus-lady" went to find her kin (the lotuses). However, logic prevails again. He dismisses the thought (tat api ayuktam - that is also improper/unlikely) because strictly, she never ventures out to gather flowers without him. This reinforces the symbiotic nature of their relationship in the forest—they were inseparable even in leisure. The verse poignantly highlights that her absence signifies a break in their established rhythm of shared existence.

यहाँ रूपक अलंकार का सुंदर प्रयोग है। सीता का मुख 'पद्म' (कमल) समान है और नेत्र 'पद्म पलाश' (कमल की पंखुड़ी) जैसे हैं। राम सोचते हैं कि क्या 'कमल-मुखी' 'कमल' लेने गयी है? यहाँ सादृश्य (Similarity) के कारण राम का मन भ्रमित हो रहा है। प्रकृति प्रेमी होने के नाते सीता को फूल पसंद थे। राम पुनः स्वयं को सांत्वना देने का प्रयास करते हैं। किन्तु, फिर वही कठोर सत्य सामने आता है—सीता की निर्भरता और प्रेम। वह राम के बिना वन की शोभा देखने या फूल चुनने भी नहीं जाती थीं। यह श्लोक उनके दाम्पत्य जीवन के सहचर्य (togetherness) को दर्शाता है कि वे हर छोटा कार्य भी साथ मिलकर करते थे। राम का 'अकेलापन' यहाँ और अधिक गहरा हो जाता है।
