स दीनो दीनया वाचा लक्ष्मणम् वाक्यम् अब्रवीत् ।
शीघ्रम् लक्ष्मण जानीहि गत्वा गोदावरीम् नदीम् ॥ ॥३-६४-१॥
Sa dīnō dīnayā vācā lakṣmaṇam vākyam abravīt । śīghram lakṣmaṇa jānīhi gatvā gōdāvarīm nadīm ॥ ॥3-64-1॥
Translation
He (Rama), being miserable and in a piteous voice, spoke these words to Lakshmana: "O Lakshmana! Go quickly to the River Godavari and find out (if she is there)."

वे (राम) अत्यंत दीन होकर और दीन वाणी (कातर स्वर) में लक्ष्मण से बोले—"हे लक्ष्मण! तुम शीघ्र गोदावरी नदी पर जाओ और पता लगाओ (कि कहीं सीता वहां तो नहीं है)।"
English Commentary
Rama, still in the throes of despair (dino), clutches at straws. Despite having logically concluded in the previous chapter that Sita wouldn't go to the river alone, his desperation overrides his logic. He commands Lakshmana to go to the Godavari river to check. The repetition of the search idea signifies his restlessness and inability to accept the finality of her disappearance without physical verification. The instruction to go 'quickly' (shighram) highlights his anxiety—every passing second is agony. It portrays the bargaining stage of grief, where one hopes against hope for a simple, harmless explanation to a tragic event.

पिछले सर्ग में धैर्य खोने के बाद, राम अब पुनः एक क्षीण आशा के सहारे लक्ष्मण को आदेश देते हैं। उनकी वाणी 'दीन' (दबी हुई/करुण) है। राम का तर्क यह है कि सीता को गोदावरी प्रिय थी, शायद वह वहां गयी हो। यह एक 'बेचैन मन' की निशानी है जो एक ही स्थान को बार-बार देखना चाहता है। यद्यपि उन्होंने पहले (श्लोक 13, सर्ग 63) में तर्क दिया था कि वह अकेली नहीं गयी होगी, परन्तु अब दुःख के अतिरेक में तर्क हार गया है और 'शायद' की भावना जीत गयी है। वे लक्ष्मण को 'शीघ्र' (तुरंत) जाने को कहते हैं, जो उनकी अधीरता को दर्शाता है।
