एषा गोदावरी सौम्य किंचन् न प्रतिभाषते ।
किम् नु लक्ष्मण वक्ष्यामि समेत्य जनकम् वचः ॥ ॥३-६४-११॥
Ēṣā gōdāvarī saumya kiñcan na pratibhāṣatē । kim nu lakṣmaṇa vakṣyāmi samētya janakam vacaḥ ॥ ॥3-64-11॥
Translation
"O Gentle One (Lakshmana)! This Godavari answers nothing. O Lakshmana! What words shall I say to King Janaka when I meet him?"

"हे सौम्य (लक्ष्मण)! यह गोदावरी तो कुछ भी उत्तर नहीं दे रही है। हे लक्ष्मण! अब मैं (मिथिला जाकर) राजा जनक से मिलकर उनसे क्या कहूँगा?"
English Commentary
Rama shifts his focus from the immediate loss to the future consequences of his failure to protect Sita. He anticipates the confrontation with King Janaka, Sita's father. This reflects the burden of honor and accountability inherent in his role as a husband and prince. The silence of the Godavari forces him to confront the reality that he has no explanation to offer. Asking Lakshmana "What shall I say?" reveals his vulnerability; he is looking for a script, an excuse, or a consolation that simply does not exist. It highlights the shame associated with failing in one's duty (dharma) of protection.

राम का शोक अब व्यक्तिगत हानि से बढ़कर 'सामाजिक लज्जा' और 'उत्तरदायित्व' की ओर मुड़ रहा है। वे जनक (सीता के पिता) के बारे में सोचते हैं। भारतीय संस्कृति में, जमाई (दामाद) के पास अपनी पत्नी की सुरक्षा की जिम्मेदारी होती है। राम सोचते हैं कि वे किस मुँह से जनक का सामना करेंगे? यह प्रश्न उनकी कुलीनता और नैतिक जिम्मेदारी को दर्शाता है। वे गोदावरी की निष्ठुरता की शिकायत लक्ष्मण से करते हैं, जैसे एक बच्चा अपने अभिभावक से शिकायत करता है। 'सौम्य' संबोधन लक्ष्मण के शांत स्वभाव के लिए है, जो राम के इस तूफान में संबल बने हुए हैं।
