Srimad Valmiki Ramayana
एवम् उक्तः तु रामेण पर्वतो मैथिलीम् प्रति ।
दर्शयन् इव ताम् सीताम् न दर्शयत राघवे ॥ ॥३-६४-३२॥
evam uktaḥ tu rāmeṇa parvato maithilīm prati । darśayan iva tām sītām na darśayata rāghave ॥ ॥3-64-32॥
Translation
Though thus addressed by Rama regarding Maithili, the mountain, appearing as if it were showing her (by its silence/presence), did not actually show her to Raghava.
हिंदी अनुवाद
राम द्वारा मैथिली (सीता) के विषय में इस प्रकार कहे जाने पर भी, वह पर्वत ऐसा प्रतीत हुआ मानो सीता को दिखा रहा हो, किन्तु उसने राघव को सीता के दर्शन नहीं कराए (मौन ही रहा)।
English Commentary
This verse captures the tragic irony. The mountain stands silent. To Rama's desperate eyes, it might have appeared 'as if' ('iva') it was gesturing or about to reveal her, perhaps due to the wind in the trees or shadows in the caves. However, it fundamentally could not show her. The mountain's unresponsiveness despite the threat highlights the isolation Rama feels. He is commanding the cosmos, but in this moment, the cosmos offers no relief, deepening his anguish.

यह श्लोक प्रकृति की विवशता और राम की भ्रांति का सुंदर चित्रण है। 'दर्शयन् इव' (मानो दिखा रहा हो) का अर्थ है कि पर्वत की गुफाएँ और झाड़ियाँ ऐसी लग रही थीं जैसे सीता वहाँ हो सकती हैं, या पर्वत की निस्तब्धता राम को एक संकेत जैसी लगी। परन्तु वास्तविकता यह थी कि पर्वत जड़ है, वह न बोल सकता है, न दिखा सकता है। 'मैथिली' और 'राघव' का प्रयोग दोनों कुलों (मिथिला और रघुवंश) की प्रतिष्ठा को रेखांकित करता है जो इस संकट में दांव पर लगी है।
