Srimad Valmiki Ramayana
असेव्यः सततम् चैव निस्तृण द्रुम पल्लवः ।
इमाम् वा सरितम् च अद्य शोषयिष्यामि लक्ष्मण ॥ ॥३-६४-३४॥
asevyaḥ satatam caiva nistṛṇa druma pallavaḥ । imām vā saritam ca adya śoṣayiṣyāmi lakṣmaṇa ॥ ॥3-64-34॥
Translation
"You will become forever uninhabitable, devoid of grass, trees, and leaves. And O Lakshmana, I will dry up this river today itself."
हिंदी अनुवाद
"(हे पर्वत!) तुम सदा के लिए निर्जन हो जाओगे, जहाँ न घास होगी, न वृक्ष और न ही पत्ते। और हे लक्ष्मण! आज मैं इस नदी को भी सुखा दूँगा।"
English Commentary
Rama's threat extends to total ecological destruction—wiping out vegetation ('nistrina druma pallavah') and drying the river ('saritam shoshayishyami'). This creates a visualization of a wasteland, reflecting the desolation in Rama's own heart. By addressing Lakshmana, Rama validates his intent; he is not muttering to himself but announcing a course of action. It emphasizes the terrifying potential of the Avatar: he who sustains life can also withdraw it if the Dharma of the world (justice for Sita) is violated.

राम का क्रोध केवल पर्वत तक सीमित नहीं रहता, वह नदी तक भी फैलता है। 'असेव्यः' (सेवन न करने योग्य) बनाकर वे पर्वत के अस्तित्व के उद्देश्य को ही समाप्त करना चाहते हैं। नदी को सुखाना और वनस्पति को नष्ट करना 'प्रलय' जैसा दृश्य उपस्थित करता है। लक्ष्मण को संबोधित करना यह दर्शाता है कि राम अपने भाई को अपनी प्रतिज्ञा का साक्षी बना रहे हैं। यह स्थिति दिखाती है कि जब धर्म का पालन करने वाला (मर्यादा पुरुषोत्तम) क्रद्ध होता है, तो प्रकृति भी सुरक्षित नहीं रहती।
