Srimad Valmiki Ramayana
यदि न आख्याति मे सीताम् अद्य चन्द्र निभ आननाम् ।
एवम् प्ररुषितो रामो दिधक्षन् इव चक्षुषा ॥ ॥३-६४-३५॥
yadi na ākhyāti me sītām adya candra nibha ānanām । evam praruṣito rāmo didhakṣan iva cakṣuṣā ॥ ॥3-64-35॥
Translation
"If it does not tell me today of Sita, whose face resembles the moon..." Thus enraged, Rama appeared as if he would burn everything with his very eyes.
हिंदी अनुवाद
"यदि यह (पर्वत/नदी) मुझे आज चन्द्रमुखी सीता का पता नहीं बताते..." इस प्रकार अत्यंत क्रोधित हुए राम ऐसे लग रहे थे मानो अपनी (क्रोधयुक्त) दृष्टि से ही सब कुछ जला डालेंगे।
English Commentary
The contrast is striking: Sita is described with the cooling imagery of the moon ('chandra nibha'), while Rama is the embodiment of scorching fire. The phrase 'didhakshan iva chakshusha' (as if burning with his eyes) suggests that his gaze alone carries the potency of fire. This intensity signifies that his threats are not hyperbolic; the very atmosphere is heating up due to his sorrow and rage. It sets the stage for the discovery that follows immediately.

'चन्द्र निभ आननाम्' (चंद्रमा के समान मुख वाली) उपमा सीता की शीतलता और सौंदर्य को याद दिलाती है, जो राम के वर्तमान 'दिधक्षन्' (जलाने की इच्छा) स्वरूप के ठीक विपरीत है। राम की आँखों में वह तेज है जो बिना बाण चलाए ही विनाश कर सकता है। यहाँ कवि ने राम के शारीरिक हाव-भाव का वर्णन किया है—आँखें लाल हैं और शरीर तपा हुआ है। यह श्लोक राम के मानवीय और अतिमानवीय स्वरूपों के बीच के पतले पर्दे को हटाता है।
