तप्त बिन्दु निकाशैः च चित्रैः क्षतज बिन्दुभिः ।
आवृतम् पश्य सौमित्रे सर्वतो धरणी तलम् ॥ ॥३-६४-४०॥
taptā bindu nikāśaiḥ ca citraiḥ kṣataja bindubhiḥ । āvṛtam paśya saumitre sarvato dharaṇī talam ॥ ॥3-64-40॥
Translation
"And see, O Saumitri, the surface of the earth covered everywhere with strange drops of blood resembling drops of molten gold."

"और हे सौमित्र! तपे हुए (पिघले हुए) सोने (या तांबे) की बूंदों के समान चमकने वाली, विचित्र रक्त की बूंदों से ढके हुए इस पृथ्वी तल को देखो।"
English Commentary
The comparison of blood ('kshataja') to 'tapta bindu' (molten drops) is vivid poetic imagery, suggesting the blood is fresh, copious, and glowing against the earth. Rama notes the ground is covered 'sarvato' (everywhere). To a husband's eyes, this abundance of blood is the worst possible sign. He fears the unthinkable—that Sita has been physically harmed or butchered. This misinterpretation leads directly to his despair in the next verse.

'क्षतज' (रक्त) की तुलना 'तप्त बिन्दु' (तपे हुए सोने/धातु की बूंदों) से करना दो बातों की ओर संकेत करता है: रक्त ताज़ा और चमकीला है, और यह किसी साधारण प्राणी का नहीं है (यह जटायु और रावण का रक्त है)। 'चित्रैः' (विचित्र/अद्भुत) शब्द बताता है कि रक्त की मात्रा और फैलाव असामान्य है। राम इसे देखकर आशंकित हो उठते हैं—उन्हें भय है कि यह रक्त सीता का हो सकता है। यह श्लोक भय और वीभत्स रस का मिश्रण है।
