भग्न दण्डम् इदम् कस्य भूमौ सौम्य निपातितम् ।
कान्चन उरः छदाः च इमे पिशाच वदनाः खराः ॥ ॥३-६४-४६॥
bhagna daṇḍam idam kasya bhūmau saumya nipātitam । kāncana uraḥ chadāḥ ca ime piśāca vadanāḥ kharāḥ ॥ ॥3-64-46॥
Translation
"O gentle one, whose broken umbrella staff has been felled to the ground? And whose are these mules with goblin-faces, wearing golden breast-plates?"

"हे सौम्य! यह किसका छत्र-दंड (डंडा) टूटकर जमीन पर गिरा है? और ये सोने के कवच (झूल) पहने हुए पिशाच-मुख वाले खच्चर (किसके हैं)?"
English Commentary
The forensic details become gruesome. The draft animals are described as 'khara' (mules/donkeys) with 'pishacha vadana' (goblin faces), indicating their demonic breed. They are armored in gold, reinforcing the wealth of their master. Rama notes the broken staff of the royal umbrella, a sign of total defeat for the chariot's owner in this specific skirmish. He is witnessing the aftermath of Jatayu's fierce resistance, though he has not yet found the bird.
