न हि तम् वेद्मि वै राम यत्र सा तनु मध्यमा ।
लक्ष्मणस्य वचः श्रुत्वा दीनः संताप मोहितः ॥ ॥३-६४-५॥
Na hi tam vēdmi vai rāma yatra sā tanu madhyamā । lakṣmaṇasya vacaḥ śrutvā dīnaḥ santāpa mōhitः ॥ ॥3-64-5॥
Translation
"Indeed, O Rama, I do not know where that slender-waisted lady is." Hearing these words of Lakshmana, Rama, wretched and deluded by torment...
हिंदी अनुवाद
"हे राम! मैं वास्तव में नहीं जानता कि वह सुडौल कटि (पतली कमर) वाली सीता कहाँ है।" लक्ष्मण के ये वचन सुनकर दीन और संताप (दुःख) से मोहित (व्याकुल) राम... (अगले श्लोक से जुड़ा है)।
English Commentary
Lakshmana admits defeat in the search. He uses the epithet tanu-madhyama (slender-waisted), evoking her delicate physical form which is now lost in the dangerous wild. This admission shatters Rama's remaining hope. The reaction is immediate: Rama becomes dina (miserable) and santapa-mohita (deluded by burning grief). The word mohita suggests a state of confusion or fainting where reality becomes blurred. Lakshmana’s confirmation that 'she is not there' acts as the trigger for Rama to take matters into his own hands in a state of near-madness, leading to the next action.

लक्ष्मण अपनी असमर्थता व्यक्त करते हैं। 'तनु मध्यमा' (पतली कमर वाली) सौंदर्य का एक पारंपरिक वर्णन है, जो सीता की सुकुमारता को याद दिलाता है। लक्ष्मण का यह कहना कि "मैं नहीं जानता" राम के लिए अंतिम प्रहार जैसा था। अब तक जो झीनी सी आशा थी, वह टूट गयी। 'संताप मोहितः' का अर्थ है कि दुःख की गर्मी (संताप) से राम का विवेक शून्य (मोहित) हो गया। जब आशा की अंतिम किरण भी बुझ जाती है, तो मोह और उन्माद छा जाता है। राम की स्थिति अब मानसिक संतुलन खोने जैसी हो रही है।
