Srimad Valmiki Ramayana
रामः समभिचक्राम स्वयम् गोदावरीम् नदीम् ।
स ताम् उपस्थितो रामः क्व सीते इति एवम् अब्रवीत् ॥ ॥३-६४-६॥
Rāmaḥ samabhicakrāma svayam gōdāvarīm nadīm । sa tām upasthitō rāmaḥ kva sītē iti ēvam abravīt ॥ ॥3-64-6॥
Translation
...Rama himself went towards the River Godavari. Having arrived there, Rama asked her (the river): "Where is Sita?"
हिंदी अनुवाद
...राम स्वयं गोदावरी नदी की ओर चल पड़े। वहां पहुँचकर राम ने उस (नदी) से कहा—"सीता कहाँ है?"
English Commentary
Driven by denial and desperation, Rama goes to the river himself. He cannot passively accept the report; he needs to see the empty riverbank with his own eyes. Standing before the river (upasthito), he interrogates it directly: 'Where is Sita?' This marks the deepening of the Pathetic Fallacy, where Rama treats nature as a conscious entity capable of answering him. It is a scene of profound loneliness—a king questioning a river because he has no one else to ask.

लक्ष्मण पर विश्वास न होने के कारण नहीं, बल्कि अपनी व्याकुलता के कारण राम 'स्वयम्' (खुद) नदी पर जाते हैं। उन्हें लगता है कि शायद सीता लक्ष्मण से छिपी हो, पर राम को देखकर सामने आ जाए। या शायद नदी राम को उत्तर दे दे। यह एक उन्मत्त प्रेमी की दशा है जो जड़ (Inanimate) प्रकृति से संवाद कर रहा है। वे नदी के सामने खड़े होकर सीधा प्रश्न करते हैं—"क्व सीते?" (सीता कहाँ है?)। यहाँ शिष्टाचार की भूमिका समाप्त हो गयी है, केवल एक सीधा, दर्द भरा प्रश्न शेष है।
