महता तपसा राम महता च अपि कर्मणा ।
राज्ञा दशरथेन असि लब्धो अमृतम् इव अमरैः ॥३-६६-३॥
mahatā tapasā rāma mahatā ca api karmaṇā |
rājñā daśarathena asi labdho amṛtam iva amaraiḥ ॥3-66-3॥
Translation
O Rama, through great penance and great deeds, you were obtained by King Dasharatha, just as the Nectar of Immortality (Amrita) was obtained by the gods.
हिंदी अनुवाद
हे राम! जैसे देवताओं ने (समुद्र मंथन से) अमृत प्राप्त किया था, वैसे ही राजा दशरथ ने महान तपस्या और महान पुण्य कर्मों के फलस्वरूप आपको प्राप्त किया था।
English Commentary
Lakshmana begins his counsel by reminding Rama of his extraordinary origin and intrinsic worth. By comparing Rama's birth to the churning of Amrita (divine nectar) by the gods, Lakshmana elevates Rama's stature above that of ordinary mortals. This is a strategic rhetorical move: reminding a grieving person of their high lineage and the immense efforts taken to bring them into existence serves to awaken their sense of duty. Dasharatha performed great penance (Tapas) and rituals (Karma) to beget Rama. Implicitly, Lakshmana is arguing that a life obtained through such cosmic effort should not be wasted in despair. It serves to ground Rama in his identity as the crown jewel of the Raghu dynasty, derived from sacrifice and intended for greatness, much like the nectar that sustains the gods.

लक्ष्मण अब राम के आत्म-गौरव को जगाने का प्रयास कर रहे हैं। राम को उनके जन्म की कठिनाई और महत्ता की याद दिलाई जा रही है। दशरथ ने पुत्र प्राप्ति के लिए पुत्रकामेष्टि यज्ञ और कठोर तप किया था, तब जाकर राम का जन्म हुआ। 'अमृतम् इव अमरैः' की उपमा अत्यंत सटीक है; जैसे अमृत देवताओं के अस्तित्व और अमरता का आधार है, वैसे ही राम दशरथ और इक्ष्वाकु वंश के अस्तित्व का आधार हैं। लक्ष्मण यह कहना चाहते हैं कि आप सामान्य पुरुष नहीं हैं, आप पुण्य का घनीभूत रूप हैं। दुःख में डूबे व्यक्ति को जब उसके महत्व और अतीत की उपलब्धियों की याद दिलाई जाती है, तो उसका मनोबल बढ़ता है। लक्ष्मण राम को यह एहसास करा रहे हैं कि उनका जीवन एक महान उद्देश्य के लिए है, केवल विलाप के लिए नहीं।
