अयम् तु सारथिः तस्य मत् पक्ष निहतो भुविः ।
परिश्रान्तस्य मे पक्षौ छित्त्वा खड्गेन रावणः ॥ ॥३-६७-१९॥
Ayam tu sārathiḥ tasya mat pakṣa nihato bhuviḥ । Pariśrāntasya me pakṣau chittvā khaḍgena rāvaṇaḥ ॥ ॥3-67-19॥
Translation
Here lies his charioteer, whom I struck down to the ground with my wings. But when I became exhausted, Ravana cut off my two wings with his sword.

यह उसका सारथी है जिसे मैंने अपने पंखों से मारकर भूमि पर गिरा दिया। (परंतु) जब मैं थक गया, तब रावण ने तलवार से मेरे दोनों पंख काट डाले।
English Commentary
The tragic conclusion of the encounter is detailed here. Jatayu first notes his success in killing the charioteer using only his wings, showcasing his natural prowess. However, the term parishrantasya (of the exhausted one) is crucial—it contextualizes his defeat not as a lack of valor, but a result of age and fatigue. Ravana’s act of cutting the wings of an exhausted opponent with a sword highlights the demon's ruthlessness and lack of chivalry.
