Srimad Valmiki Ramayana
सीताम् आदाय वैदेहीम् उत्पपात विहायसम् ।
रक्षसा निहतम् पूर्वम् न माम् हन्तुम् त्वम् अर्हसि ॥ ॥३-६७-२०॥
Sītām ādāya vaidehīm utpapāta vihāyasam । Rakṣasā nihatam pūrvam na mām hantum tvam arhasi ॥ ॥3-67-20॥
Translation
Taking Vaidehi (Sita), he flew up into the sky. I have already been slain by the Rakshasa; you ought not to kill me.
हिंदी अनुवाद
वह विदेहनंदिनी सीता को लेकर आकाश मार्ग से उड़ गया। मुझे उस राक्षस ने पहले ही मार दिया है, अतः आप मुझे (क्रोध में) न मारें।
English Commentary
Jatayu concludes his report: Ravana has escaped into the sky with Vaidehi. The second half of the verse reveals a misunderstanding Rama initially had—he suspected the bird might have eaten Sita. Jatayu pleads, 'Do not kill me,' clarifying that he is already mortally wounded by the Rakshasa. This plea is heartbreaking; the savior fears being mistaken for the perpetrator. It emphasizes the confusion and high tension of the moment. The use of 'Vaidehi' reminds Rama of Sita's delicate nature and royal heritage, now held captive in the sky.
हिंदी टीका
जटायु अपनी बात समाप्त करते हुए कहते हैं कि रावण सीता को लेकर 'विहायसम्' (आकाश) में उड़ गया। श्लोक का दूसरा भाग बहुत ही संवेदनशील है। जब राम और लक्ष्मण वहां पहुंचे थे, तो उन्हें लगा था कि शायद यह कोई राक्षस है जिसने सीता को खा लिया है। जटायु को भय है कि राम उन्हें शत्रु समझकर बाण न चला दें, इसलिए वे कहते हैं, "मुझे मत मारो, मैं तो पहले ही उस राक्षस द्वारा मारा जा चुका हूँ।" यह राम की उस समय की उग्र मनोदशा और जटायु की लाचारी को दर्शाता है। 'वैदेही' नाम का प्रयोग सीता के उच्च कुल और उनकी कोमलता को याद दिलाता है।
