एकम् एक अयने कृच्छ्रे निःश्वसन्तम् मुहुर् मुहुः ।
समीक्ष्य दुःखितो रामः सौमित्रिम् इदम् अब्रवीत् ॥ ॥३-६७-२३॥
Ekam eka ayane kṛcchre niḥśvasantam muhur muhuḥ । Samīkṣya duḥkhito rāmaḥ saumitrim idam abravīt ॥ ॥3-67-23॥
Translation
Seeing Jatayu lying alone on that difficult path (of death), breathing heavily again and again, the sorrowful Rama spoke these words to Saumitri (Lakshmana).

दुर्गम मार्ग (मृत्यु के पथ) पर अकेले पड़े हुए और बार-बार (कठिनाई से) श्वास लेते हुए जटायु को देखकर, दुखित राम ने सुमित्रानंदन (लक्ष्मण) से यह कहा।
English Commentary
The imagery here is stark. Jatayu is described as being on a 'difficult path' (krichhre ayane)—the singular journey of death—alone. The phrase muhur muhuh nihshvasantam depicts the ragged, labored breathing of the dying bird. Rama, observing this struggle intimately, turns to Lakshmana to vocalize his despair. The verse highlights the isolation of death and the helplessness of the loved ones watching. Rama’s address to 'Saumitri' marks the beginning of a lament where he reflects on the chain of misfortunes that have befallen him.
