Srimad Valmiki Ramayana
राज्यम् भ्रष्टम् वने वासः सीता नष्टा मृते द्विजः ।
ईदृशी इयम् मम अलक्ष्मीः दहेत् अपि पावकम् ॥ ॥३-६७-२४॥
Rājyam bhraṣṭam vane vāsaḥ sītā naṣṭā mṛte dvijaḥ । Īdṛśī iyam mama alakṣmīḥ dahet api pāvakam ॥ ॥3-67-24॥
Translation
My kingdom is lost, I live in the forest, Sita is lost, and now this bird has died. Such is my misfortune that it could burn even the fire itself.
हिंदी अनुवाद
राज्य छूट गया, वन में वास मिला, सीता खो गईं और अब यह पक्षी (जटायु) भी मेरे लिए मर गया। मेरा दुर्भाग्य (अलक्ष्मी) ऐसा है कि यह अग्नि को भी जला सकता है।
English Commentary
Rama enumerates the relentless series of tragedies he has faced: loss of kingdom, exile, loss of Sita, and now the death of Jatayu ('dvija' - twice-born/bird). He personifies his misfortune (Alakshmi) as a force of nature. The metaphor 'it could burn even the fire' is profound. Fire is the element that burns everything else, yet Rama feels his bad luck is so potent it would consume the consumer. This expression reflects intense self-pity and guilt, as he feels his presence is the cause of destruction for those around him.

यह श्लोक राम की हताशा (despair) का शिखर है। वे अपने दुखों की गणना करते हैं: राजपाट छूटना, वनवास, पत्नी का हरण, और अब रक्षक जटायु की मृत्यु। 'द्विज' शब्द का प्रयोग जटायु के लिए किया गया है (पक्षी भी अंडज होने के कारण द्विज कहलाते हैं)। राम अपनी 'अलक्ष्मी' (दुर्भाग्य) को इतना प्रबल मानते हैं कि वह 'पावकम्' (अग्नि) को भी जला सकती है। अग्नि सबको जलाती है, पर राम का दुर्भाग्य अग्नि से भी अधिक दाहक है। यह एक अद्भुत अतिशयोक्ति (hyperbole) है जो उनके मानसिक संताप की गहराई को मापती है।
