Srimad Valmiki Ramayana
पुत्रो विश्रवसः साक्षात् भ्राता वैश्रवणस्य च ।
इति उक्त्वा दुर्लभान् प्राणान् मुमोच पतगेश्वरः ॥ ॥३-६८-१६॥
putro viśravasaḥ sākṣāt bhrātā vaiśravaṇasya ca । iti uktvā durlabhān prāṇān mumoca patageśvaraḥ ॥ ॥3-68-16॥
Translation
" 'He is the son of Vishravas and the direct brother of Vaishravana (Kubera)'—saying this, the lord of birds released his life breaths, which are difficult to hold."

"(वह) विश्रवा का पुत्र है और साक्षात् कुबेर (वैश्रवण) का भाई है"—बस इतना कहकर उस पक्षीराज ने अपने दुर्लभ प्राणों को त्याग दिया।
English Commentary
These are the final words of the noble bird. He reveals the crucial identity of the enemy: Ravana is not an ordinary demon but the son of the sage Vishravas and the brother of Kubera (the God of Wealth). This confirms the magnitude of the opponent Rama faces. The phrase durlabhān prāṇān (difficult-to-hold life) suggests that Jatayu was holding onto his life through sheer willpower against fatal injuries, letting go only once his duty was fully discharged.

ये जटayu के मुख से निकले अंतिम शब्द थे। राम ने पूछा था कि वह कौन है, और जटayu ने जाते-जाते रावण की पूरी पहचान (कुल और संबंध) बता दी। 'वैश्रवण' (कुबेर) का भाई बताने का अर्थ है कि शत्रु अत्यंत शक्तिशाली और देव-तुल्य है। 'दुर्लभान् प्राणान्' (दुर्लभ प्राण) का अर्थ है कि जटayu ने अब तक बहुत कष्ट सहकर प्राण रोके हुए थे, और सूचना पूरी होते ही उन्होंने देह त्याग दी। उनका जीवन-लक्ष्य पूर्ण हो गया था।
