Srimad Valmiki Ramayana
मम अयम् नूनम् अर्थेषु यतमानो विहंगमः ।
राक्षसेन हतः संख्ये प्राणान् त्यजति मत् कृते ॥ ॥३-६८-२॥
Mama ayam nūnam artheṣu yatamāno vihaṃgamaḥ । Rākṣasena hataḥ saṃkhye prāṇān tyajati mat kṛte ॥ ॥3-68-2॥
Translation
Surely this bird, striving for my cause, has been slain by the Rakshasa in battle and is giving up his life for my sake.
हिंदी अनुवाद
निश्चय ही यह पक्षी मेरे कार्यों (अर्थ) को सिद्ध करने का प्रयास करते हुए, युद्ध में राक्षस द्वारा मारा गया है और अब मेरे लिए अपने प्राण त्याग रहा है।
English Commentary
Rama formally acknowledges the debt he owes to Jatayu. He emphasizes that the bird had no personal stake in the fight; it was entirely mama artheshu (for my purpose) and mat krute (for my sake). This recognition transforms Jatayu’s death from a tragedy into a martyrdom. The verse highlights the concept of Paropakaara (helping others) at the cost of one's life. Rama sees that the bird is not just dying naturally but is "giving up life" actively as an offering to him. It deepens the bond between the Avatar and the devotee.

राम यहाँ कृतज्ञता (Gratitude) व्यक्त कर रहे हैं। वे स्वीकार करते हैं कि यह युद्ध जटायु का अपना नहीं था। 'मम अर्थेषु' (मेरे प्रयोजन/कार्य के लिए) और 'मत् कृते' (मेरे खातिर)—इन शब्दों की पुनरावृत्ति यह सिद्ध करती है कि राम इस बलिदान का भार अपने कंधों पर महसूस कर रहे हैं। जटायु का बलिदान निष्काम कर्म का सर्वोच्च उदाहरण है; उन्हें सीता से कुछ नहीं चाहिए था, वे केवल धर्म और राम की सेवा के लिए लड़े। 'यतमानो' (प्रयास करते हुए) शब्द बताता है कि जटायु ने अंतिम सांस तक हार नहीं मानी। राम इस ऋण को कभी न चुका पाने की पीड़ा व्यक्त कर रहे हैं।
