बहूनि रक्षसाम् वासे वर्षाणि वसता सुखम् ।
अनेन दण्डकारण्ये विशीर्णम् इह पक्षिणा ॥ ॥३-६८-२०॥
bahūni rakṣasām vāse varṣāṇi vasatā sukham । anena daṇḍakāraṇye viśīrṇam iha pakṣiṇā ॥ ॥3-68-20॥
Translation
"Having lived happily for many years in this Dandaka forest, the abode of Rakshasas, this bird lies shattered here today."
हिंदी अनुवाद
"राक्षसों के निवास स्थान इस दंडकारण्य में बहुत वर्षों तक सुखपूर्वक निवास करने के बाद, आज यह पक्षीराज यहाँ (मेरे लिए) क्षत-विक्षत होकर पड़ा है।"
English Commentary
Rama reflects on the irony of fate. Jatayu survived and thrived for ages in the dangerous Dandaka forest, surrounded by demons. Yet, his end came violently in a single encounter. The word viśīrṇam (shattered/broken up) conveys the brutality of his death. Rama acknowledges Jatayu's strength and survival skills, which makes his death in service of Rama even more poignant. It underscores the cost of righteousness in a hostile world.

राम यहाँ जटayu के अतीत और वर्तमान की तुलना कर रहे हैं। दंडकारण्य, जो राक्षसों का गढ़ था, वहाँ जटayu वर्षों तक 'सुखम्' (सुखपूर्वक) और निर्भय होकर रहे, जो उनकी शक्ति को दर्शाता है। लेकिन आज वही शक्तिशाली पक्षी 'विशीर्णम्' (बिखरा हुआ/नष्ट) है। राम के कथन में आत्म-ग्लानि का भाव भी है, मानो वे सोच रहे हों कि "मेरे कारण ही इनका यह अंत हुआ।" यह जीवन की अनिश्चितता पर एक टिप्पणी है।
