Srimad Valmiki Ramayana
अनेक वार्षिको यः तु चिर काल समुत्थितः ।
सो अयम् अद्य हतः शेते कालो हि दुर्अतिक्रमः ॥ ॥३-६८-२१॥
aneka vārṣiko yaḥ tu cira kāla samutthitaḥ । so ayam adya hataḥ śete kālo hi duratikramaḥ ॥ ॥3-68-21॥
Translation
"He who was of many years and had risen (been born) long ago, lies here killed today. Indeed, Time (Kala) is difficult to overcome."
हिंदी अनुवाद
"जो अनेक वर्षों के (वृद्ध) थे और बहुत पहले उत्पन्न हुए थे, वे ही आज मारे जाकर यहाँ सो रहे हैं। वास्तव में, काल (समय/मृत्यु) को पार करना अत्यंत कठिन है।"
English Commentary
This verse acts as a philosophical epitaph. Rama reflects on the invincibility of Time (Kala). Despite Jatayu's immense age (traditional lore assigns him tens of thousands of years) and strength, he could not escape his appointed end. The phrase kālo hi duratikramaḥ (Time is indeed unsurpassable) is a famous dictum from the Ramayana. It signifies acceptance; even the Avatara acknowledges the supreme power of Time over all embodied beings.

यह श्लोक वाल्मीकि रामायण के दार्शनिक सार को प्रस्तुत करता है। जटayu की आयु 60,000 वर्ष मानी जाती है, फिर भी अंत में उन्हें काल के गाल में जाना पड़ा। श्रीराम यहाँ एक महान सत्य उद्घोषित करते हैं: 'कालो हि दुर्अतिक्रमः' (काल का उल्लंघन कोई नहीं कर सकता)। चाहे कोई कितना भी शक्तिशाली या दीर्घायु क्यों न हो, मृत्यु अटल है। राम अपनी व्यक्तिगत पीड़ा को एक सार्वभौमिक सत्य के माध्यम से समझने का प्रयास कर रहे हैं।
