Srimad Valmiki Ramayana
पश्य लक्ष्मण गृध्रो अयम् उपकारी हतः च मे ।
सीताम् अभ्यवपन्नो हि रावणेन बलीयसा ॥ ॥३-६८-२२॥
Paśya Lakṣmaṇa gṛdhro ayam upakārī hataḥ ca me । Sītām abhyavapanno hi Rāvaṇena balīyasā ॥ ॥3-68-22॥
Translation
Behold, O Lakshmana! This vulture, my benefactor, has been killed for my sake. Indeed, he was slain by the mighty Ravana while attempting to rescue Sita.
हिंदी अनुवाद
हे लक्ष्मण! देखो, यह उपकारी गिद्धराज मेरे ही कारण मारा गया है। अत्यंत बलवान रावण से सीता को छुड़ाने के प्रयास में इन्होंने अपने प्राण त्याग दिए।
English Commentary
This verse highlights Rama's profound gratitude and sense of moral debt. By addressing Jatayu as upakārī (benefactor), Rama acknowledges that this sacrifice was personal—it was for "my sake" (me). Rama recognizes the disparity in power between the aging Jatayu and the mighty (balīyasā) Ravana, emphasizing that Jatayu fought not out of arrogance, but out of sheer duty and compassion to save Sita. It sets the tone for the subsequent rites, establishing that Rama views Jatayu not merely as a bird, but as a martyr who died protecting Rama's honor and family.

यहाँ श्रीराम की कृतज्ञता और शोक का मार्मिक चित्रण है। श्रीराम लक्ष्मण से कहते हैं कि जटायु का वध कोई साधारण मृत्यु नहीं है, बल्कि यह एक सर्वोच्च बलिदान है। 'उपकारी' शब्द का प्रयोग करके राम यह स्वीकार करते हैं कि जटायु का उन पर ऋण है। एक वृद्ध पक्षी जानते हुए भी कि रावण उनसे कहीं अधिक शक्तिशाली ('बलीयसा') है, केवल धर्म और रक्षा के लिए भिड़ गया। राम यहाँ अपनी आत्मग्लानि भी प्रकट कर रहे हैं कि उनकी पत्नी की रक्षा के प्रयास में एक निरपराध और धर्मनिष्ठ आत्मा को अपने प्राण गवाने पड़े। यह श्लोक शरणागत वत्सलता और वीरता के सम्मान का प्रतीक है।
