गृध्र राज्यम् परित्यज्य पितृ पैतामहम् महत् ।
मम हेतोः अयम् प्राणान् मुमोच पतगेश्वरः ॥ ॥३-६८-२३॥
Gṛdhra rājyam parityajya pitṛ paitāmaham mahat । Mama hetoḥ ayam prāṇān mumoca patageśvaraḥ ॥ ॥3-68-23॥
Translation
This Lord of birds, having abandoned his vast ancestral kingdom handed down from his father and grandfather, has given up his life for my sake.

पक्षियों के स्वामी (जटayu) ने मेरे लिए अपने पिता और पितामह के समय से चले आ रहे विशाल गिद्ध-राज्य और अपने प्राणों का भी त्याग कर दिया।
English Commentary
Rama reflects on the magnitude of what was lost. Jatayu was not an ordinary bird but a sovereign (Patageśvara), ruling an ancestral kingdom (pitṛ paitāmaham). Rama emphasizes that Jatayu sacrificed two things usually held most dear: his sovereignty and his life forces (prāṇān). The phrase mama hetoḥ (for my reason/sake) is repeated, underscoring the personal weight Rama feels. It illustrates the concept of Tyaga (sacrifice), where material power and survival instincts are overridden by the higher call of Dharma and service to the Divine.

श्रीराम यहाँ जटायु के त्याग की विशालता का वर्णन कर रहे हैं। जटायु केवल एक पक्षी नहीं थे, वे 'पतगेश्वर' (पक्षियों के राजा) थे। उन्होंने अपने 'पैतामहम्' (पुरखों के) राज्य और ऐश्वर्य का मोह नहीं किया। प्रायः जीव अपने प्राण और संपत्ति की रक्षा पहले करता है, किन्तु जटायु ने 'मम हेतोः' (मेरे हेतु) सब कुछ न्योछावर कर दिया। यह श्लोक दर्शाता है कि परोपकार और धर्म के लिए राज्य और प्राणों का मोह भी तुच्छ हो जाता है। राम यह स्मरण कर रहे हैं कि जटayu का जीवन कितना वैभवशाली था, जिसका अंत उन्होंने धर्म रक्षा में किया।
