Srimad Valmiki Ramayana
सौमित्रे हर काष्ठानि निर्मथिष्यामि पावकम् ।
गृध्र राजम् दिधक्षामि मत् कृते निधनम् गतम् ॥ ॥३-६८-२७॥
Saumitre hara kāṣṭhāni nirmathiṣyāmi pāvakam । Gṛdhra rājam didhakṣāmi mat kṛte nidhanam gatam ॥ ॥3-68-27॥
Translation
O Son of Sumitra, bring logs of wood; I shall generate fire by friction. I wish to cremate the King of vultures, who met his death for my sake.
हिंदी अनुवाद
हे सुमित्रानंदन! तुम लकड़ियाँ ले आओ, मैं (अरणी मंथन करके) अग्नि उत्पन्न करूँगा। मैं अपने लिए प्राण त्यागने वाले इस गृध्रराज का दाह-संस्कार करना चाहता हूँ।
English Commentary
Rama initiates the funeral rites strictly according to Vedic injunctions. The phrase nirmathiṣyāmi pāvakam is crucial; it means producing fire through friction (using Arani wood), which is the method for generating consecrated sacrificial fire, rather than using an existing mundane fire. Rama explicitly states his intent to burn (didhakṣāmi) the body, granting Jatayu the rite of cremation which releases the soul, a privilege usually reserved for humans in the Aryan tradition. This confirms Jatayu's elevation to a status equal to a human warrior and father figure.

यहाँ राम क्रियाशील होकर अंतिम संस्कार की तैयारी करते हैं। 'निर्मथिष्यामि पावकम्' वाक्यांश महत्वपूर्ण है—वैदिक काल में पवित्र कार्यों के लिए अग्नि कहीं से मांग कर नहीं लाई जाती थी, बल्कि मंत्रोच्चार के साथ लकड़ियों (अरणी) को रगड़ कर उत्पन्न की जाती थी। राम एक साधारण वनवासी की तरह नहीं, बल्कि एक वैदिक मर्यादा पुरुषोत्तम की तरह विधि-विधान से संस्कार करना चाहते हैं। वे लक्ष्मण को लकड़ियाँ लाने की आज्ञा देते हैं और स्वयं अग्नि प्रकट करने का दायित्व लेते हैं, जो कर्ता (पुत्र) का मुख्य कार्य है।
