Srimad Valmiki Ramayana
नाथम् पतग लोकस्य चिताम् आरोपयामि अहम् ।
इमम् धक्ष्यामि सौमित्रे हतम् रौद्रेण रक्षसा ॥ ॥३-६८-२८॥
Nātham pataga lokasya citām āropayāmi aham । Imam dhakṣyāmi Saumitre hatam raudreṇa rakṣasā ॥ ॥3-68-28॥
Translation
I am placing the Lord of the bird-world upon the pyre. O Son of Sumitra, I shall incinerate this one who was slain by the fierce demon.
हिंदी अनुवाद
हे सुमित्रे! मैं पक्षीलोक के स्वामी को चिता पर चढ़ा रहा हूँ। उस क्रूर राक्षस द्वारा मारे गए इस (महान आत्मा) का मैं दाह करूँगा।
English Commentary
This verse describes the physical act of placing the body on the pyre (citām). Rama takes personal responsibility (aham - I myself) to lift and place the "Lord of the bird world." This personal touch is significant; usually, touching a corpse brings ritual impurity, but here it is an act of supreme devotion and duty. By referring to Ravana as the raudreṇa rakṣasā (fierce/terrible demon), Rama acknowledges the violence of Jatayu's end, reinforcing the need for a proper sanctified exit through Agni (fire) to cleanse the trauma of death.

राम अपने हाथों से जटायु के शव को उठाते हैं। 'आरोपयामि अहम्' (मैं चढ़ा रहा हूँ) दर्शाता है कि राम यह कार्य सेवकों या लक्ष्मण पर नहीं छोड़ रहे, बल्कि स्वयं कर रहे हैं। स्पर्श दोष का विचार किए बिना, प्रेम और आदर वश वे क्षत-विक्षत शव को चिता पर रखते हैं। 'रौद्रेण रक्षसा' (भयानक राक्षस द्वारा) का उल्लेख करके वे पुनः स्मरण करते हैं कि जटayu की मृत्यु हिंसात्मक और अन्यायपूर्ण थी, इसलिए उनका संस्कार और भी आवश्यक है ताकि उनकी आत्मा को शांति मिले और वे सद्गति को प्राप्त हों।
