कथम् तत् चन्द्र संकाशम् मुखम् आसीत् मनोहरम् ।
सीतया कानि च उक्तानि तस्मिन् काले द्विजोत्तम ॥ ॥३-६८-६॥
Katham tat candra saṃkāśam mukham āsīt manoharam । Sītayā kāni ca uktāni tasmin kāle dvijottama ॥ ॥3-68-6॥
Translation
O Best of Birds! How did that captivating moon-like face look at that time? And what words were spoken by Sita at that moment?

हे द्विजोत्तम (पक्षियों में श्रेष्ठ)! उस समय उस चंद्र-तुल्य सुंदर मुख की क्या दशा थी? और सीता ने उस समय क्या कहा था?
English Commentary
Rama shifts from the "Why" to the deeply emotional "How." He asks about Sita's visage, recalling it as chandra sankasham (moon-like). He torments himself wondering how fear might have altered her beautiful face. Asking "What did she say?" reveals his desperate need for a connection, a message, or a final cry that he missed. Addressing Jatayu as Dvijottama (Best of Twice-born/Birds) acknowledges the bird's sanctity as the sole witness to these intimate and tragic details. It is a request for a memory he can hold onto.

रणनीतिक प्रश्नों के बाद राम पुनः भावुक हो जाते हैं। एक प्रेमी और पति के रूप में, वे सीता की मानसिक स्थिति को विजुअलाइज़ (visualize) करना चाहते हैं। 'चन्द्र संकाशम्' (चंद्रमा के समान) मुख अब कैसा दिख रहा होगा—क्या वह भय से पीला पड़ गया था? यह कल्पना राम को पीड़ा दे रही है। वे जटायु से सीता के अंतिम शब्दों ('कानि उक्तानि') के बारे में पूछते हैं, शायद इस उम्मीद में कि सीता ने उनके लिए कोई संदेश छोड़ा होगा। 'द्विजोत्तम' संबोधन जटायु को सम्मान देने के लिए है। यह श्लोक विरह की वेदना को मूर्त रूप देता है।
