सा हृता राक्षसेन्द्रेण रावणेन दुरात्मना ।
मायाम् आस्थाय विपुलाम् वात दुर्दिन संकुलाम् ॥ ॥३-६८-९॥
Sā hṛtā rākṣasendreṇa rāvaṇena durātmanā । Māyām āsthāya vipulām vāta durdina saṃkulām ॥ ॥3-68-9॥
Translation
She has been abducted by the evil-minded King of Rakshasas, Ravana, who created a vast illusion consisting of wind and stormy darkness.
हिंदी अनुवाद
उस दुरात्मा राक्षसराज रावण ने आंधी और बादलों (अंधकार) से युक्त विशाल माया रचकर उनका (सीता का) हरण किया है।
English Commentary
Jatayu delivers the critical intelligence. He identifies the perpetrator explicitly: Ravana, the King of Rakshasas. He describes Ravana's nature as duratmana (evil-souled). Crucially, he explains the method: Mayam (illusion). Ravana used magic to conjure vata durdina (stormy weather/gale and darkness) to cover his tracks. This explains the sudden disappearance and lack of other witnesses. By revealing this, Jatayu informs Rama that he is dealing with a sorcerer-warrior, preparing Rama for a war that will be fought on both physical and supernatural planes.
