अग्नि ज्वाल निकाशेन ललाटस्थेन दीप्यता ।
महापक्षेण पिंगेन विपुलेन आयतेन च ॥ ॥३-६९-२९॥
Agni jvāla nikāśena lalāṭasthena dīpyatā । Mahāpakṣeṇa piṅgena vipulena āyatena ca ॥ ॥3-69-29॥

(Continuing to the next verse) ...shining like a flame of fire situated on his forehead (chest-brow), having huge eyelids, yellowish-brown, broad and wide...

(अगले श्लोक के साथ इसका अन्वय है) उसके ललाट (छाती के ऊपरी भाग) पर स्थित, अग्नि की ज्वाला के समान चमकने वाली, विशाल पलकों वाली, पीली और बहुत चौड़ी तथा लंबी... (एक आंख थी)।
English Commentary
This verse begins the description of his most striking feature: the single eye. Since he is headless, lalāṭasthena (situated on the forehead) refers to the upper part of his chest serving as a brow. The eye glows like agni jvāla (fire flames) and is piṅgena (tawny/yellowish-red), colors associated with rage and toxicity in Sanskrit poetics. Mahāpakṣeṇa (with great wings/eyelids) emphasizes the size of the eye. This imagery creates a focal point of terror—a burning, unblinking gaze emanating from the center of a mountain-like body.

चूँकि कबंध का सिर नहीं है, इसलिए यहाँ 'ललाट' (माथा) का अर्थ छाती का ऊपरी भाग माना जाता है जहाँ उसकी आंख स्थित थी। उसकी आंख का वर्णन अत्यंत डरावना है। 'अग्नि ज्वाल निकाशेन' (आग की लपटों जैसी) और 'पिंगेन' (पीली/भूरी) आँखें उसकी क्रूरता और राक्षसी प्रवृत्ति को दर्शाती हैं। 'महापक्षेण' का अर्थ है जिसकी पलकें (wings of the eye) बहुत बड़ी हों। यह एक साइक्लोप्स (Cyclops) जैसी छवि प्रस्तुत करता है, लेकिन और भी अधिक विचित्र क्योंकि यह आंख चेहरे पर नहीं, धड़ पर है। यह 'दीप्त' (जलती हुई) दृष्टि सीधे राम और लक्ष्मण पर केंद्रित थी।
