Srimad Valmiki Ramayana
महान्तम् दारुणम् भीमम् कबंधम् भुज संवृतम् ।
कबंधम् इव संस्थानत् अति घोर प्रदशनम् ॥ ॥३-६९-३४॥
Mahāntam dāruṇam bhīmam kabandham bhuja saṃvṛtam । Kabandham iva saṃsthānat ati ghora pradaśanam ॥ ॥3-69-34॥
Translation
He was huge, cruel, and terrifying, surrounded by his own arms. Because of his shape/structure, he looked exactly like a 'Kabandha' (headless trunk), and his appearance was exceedingly ghastly.

वह विशाल, कठोर और भयानक था तथा अपनी भुजाओं से घिरा हुआ था। अपनी (सिर-विहीन) आकृति के कारण वह 'कबंध' (धड़) जैसा ही दिखता था और उसका दर्शन अत्यंत डरावना था।
English Commentary
This verse plays on the word 'Kabandha'. While it is the demon's proper name, the text notes he looked kabandham iva (like a headless trunk), justifying the nomenclature through his saṃsthānat (structure/formation). The adjectives mahāntam (huge), dāruṇam (cruel), and bhīmam (frightening) pile up to create an atmosphere of dread. The phrase bhuja saṃvṛtam (surrounded/covered by arms) paints a picture of a creature that is more limbs than body, a living trap waiting to spring.
