Srimad Valmiki Ramayana
तौ उवाच महाबाहुः कबन्धो दानव उत्तमः ।
कौ युवाम् वृषभ स्कन्धौ महा खड्ग धनुर् धरौ ॥ ॥३-६९-४३॥
Tau uvāca mahābāhuḥ kabandho dānava uttamaḥ । Kau yuvām vṛṣabha skandhau mahā khaḍga dhanur dharau ॥ ॥3-69-43॥
Translation
That long-armed Kabandha, the excellent Danava, said to them: "Who are you two, having shoulders like a bull, and wielding great swords and bows?"
हिंदी अनुवाद
उस महाबाहु और दानवों में श्रेष्ठ कबंध ने उन दोनों से कहा—"वृषभ (बैल) के समान चौड़े कंधों वाले, और विशाल खड्ग तथा धनुष धारण करने वाले तुम दोनों कौन हो?"
English Commentary
Having secured his prey, Kabandha initiates an interrogation. He observes their warrior physiology, specifically vṛṣabha skandhau (shoulders like a bull), a classical Indian metaphor for masculine strength and virility. He also notes their mahā (great) weaponry. This curiosity implies that Rama and Lakshmana do not fit the profile of his usual prey (animals or sages). The demon acknowledges their potential threat even while holding them captive, setting up the dialogue that will lead to his liberation.

शिकार को पकड़ने के बाद कबंध उनसे प्रश्न करता है। वह उनकी शारीरिक बनावट से प्रभावित है। 'वृषभ स्कन्धौ' (बैल जैसे कंधों वाले) एक महापुरुष लक्षण है जो शक्ति और पौरुष को दर्शाता है। कबंध देख रहा है कि ये साधारण तपस्वी नहीं हैं, बल्कि 'महा खड्ग धनुर् धरौ' (बड़े हथियार रखने वाले) हैं। 'दानव उत्तमः' (दानवों में श्रेष्ठ) विशेषण यहाँ व्यंग्यात्मक हो सकता है या उसकी शक्ति के संदर्भ में हो सकता है। राक्षस को आश्चर्य है कि इतने बलवान पुरुष उसके जाल में कैसे फँस गए और वे कौन हैं।
