Srimad Valmiki Ramayana
घोरम् देशम् इमम् प्राप्तौ दैवेन मम चाक्षुषौ ।
वदतम् कार्यम् इह वाम् किम् अर्थम् च आगतौ युवाम् ॥ ॥३-६९-४४॥
Ghoram deśam imam prāptau daivena mama cākṣuṣau । Vadatam kāryam iha vām kim artham ca āgatau yuvām ॥ ॥3-69-44॥
Translation
"By destiny, you two have arrived in this terrible region and have fallen within my sight (range). Speak, what is your business here, and for what purpose have you come?"
हिंदी अनुवाद
"दैव योग से तुम दोनों इस भयानक वन प्रदेश में आ पहुंचे हो और मेरी दृष्टि के सामने (मेरे चंगुल में) आ गए हो। बताओ, यहाँ तुम्हारा क्या कार्य है और तुम किस उद्देश्य से आए हो?"
English Commentary
Kabandha attributes their arrival to daivena (fate/destiny). Even a monster acknowledges a cosmic order that brings food to him. The phrase mama cākṣuṣau literally means "within the range of my eyes," but practically implies "within my kill zone." Despite his hunger, he pauses to interrogate them, intrigued by the incongruity of noble youths wandering in such a ghoram deśam (terrible region). This moment of dialogue builds tension before the inevitable violence.

कबंध यहाँ 'दैव' (भाग्य/नियति) का उल्लेख करता है। राक्षसी प्रवृत्ति होने के बावजूद, वह मानता है कि भोजन उसे भाग्य द्वारा प्राप्त होता है। 'मम चाक्षुषौ' (मेरी आँखों/दृष्टि के सामने) का अर्थ यहाँ उसकी पकड़ या रेंज से है, क्योंकि वह देख रहा है कि शिकार अब बच नहीं सकता। वह उत्सुक है कि ऐसे भयानक वन ('घोरम् देशम्'), जहाँ सामान्य मनुष्य आने का साहस नहीं करते, वहाँ ये राजकुमार जैसे दिखने वाले युवा क्यों आए हैं। यह प्रश्न उसकी भूख और जिज्ञासा दोनों को दर्शाता है।
