व्यसनम् जीवित अन्ताय प्राप्तम् अप्राप्य ताम् प्रियाम् ।
कालस्य सुमहत् वीर्यम् सर्व भूतेषु लक्ष्मण ॥ ॥३-६९-४८॥
Vyasanam jīvita antāya prāptam aprāpya tām priyām । Kālasya sumahat vīryam sarva bhūteṣu lakṣmaṇa ॥ ॥3-69-48॥
Translation
"Without having found that beloved (Sita), we have encountered this calamity that spells the end of life. O Lakshmana, the power of Time (Destiny) over all beings is exceedingly great."
हिंदी अनुवाद
"उस प्रिया (सीता) को पाए बिना ही हम इस जीवन-नाशक संकट में पड़ गए हैं। हे लक्ष्मण! सभी प्राणियों पर 'काल' (समय/भाग्य) का बहुत बड़ा प्रभाव (वीर्य) होता है।"
English Commentary
Rama's despair is rooted in unfulfilled duty rather than simple fear of death. To die aprāpya tām priyām (without finding the beloved) implies a failure of his mission. He reflects on the supremacy of Kala (Time/Destiny), stating its power (vīryam) is absolute over all beings. This is a moment of existential resignation, acknowledging that even divine avatars, within the narrative of human existence, are subject to the crushing wheels of Time.

राम का विषाद अपनी मृत्यु के भय से अधिक 'उद्देश्य की विफलता' के कारण है। 'अप्राप्य ताम् प्रियाम्' (सीता को पाए बिना) मरना उन्हें अधिक खलता है। यहाँ राम एक दार्शनिक सत्य बोलते हैं: 'कालस्य सुमहत् वीर्यम्'। भारतीय दर्शन में 'काल' सर्वशक्तिमान है जो राजा और रंक, देवता और दानव, सबको निगलता है। राम यहाँ स्वयं को भी काल के अधीन मान रहे हैं, जो उनकी विनम्रता और स्थिति के यथार्थवादी आकलन को दर्शाता है।
