Srimad Valmiki Ramayana
एवम् उक्तः तु रामेण महर्षिः लोक विश्रुतः ।
अब्रवीत् मधुरम् वाक्यम् हर्षेण महता युतः ॥ ॥३-७-१७॥
Evam uktaḥ tu rāmeṇa maharṣiḥ loka viśrutaḥ । abravīt madhuram vākyam harṣeṇa mahatā yutaḥ ॥ ॥3-7-17॥
Translation
Being addressed thus by Rama, the world-renowned great sage spoke sweet words, filled with great joy.

राम के द्वारा ऐसा कहे जाने पर, संसार में विख्यात महर्षि सुतीक्ष्ण ने अत्यंत हर्ष के साथ मधुर वचन कहे।
English Commentary
Usually, refusing a gift can cause offense, but here the sage is 'filled with great joy' upon hearing Rama's refusal. This marks the quality of a true spiritual master. Sutikshna is delighted that Rama adheres strictly to Dharma and refuses to accept liberation as charity. He appreciates Rama's resolve to uphold the Kshatriya code of earning one's own merit. The 'sweet words' he speaks subsequent to this show that his affection has only deepened. It signifies that a master is most pleased when the disciple chooses the path of righteousness and self-effort over shortcuts, even if it means declining the master's own offering.

राम द्वारा अपने पुण्य (स्वर्ग) को अस्वीकार करने पर ऋषि को क्रोध आना चाहिए था, लेकिन यहाँ वे 'हर्षण महता युतः' (अत्यंत हर्ष से युक्त) हैं। यह एक सच्चे गुरु और संत का लक्षण है। वे प्रसन्न हैं कि राम धर्म पर दृढ़ हैं और भिक्षा में मुक्ति नहीं चाहते। ऋषि राम की आत्मनिर्भरता और क्षत्रिय धर्म के पालन से प्रभावित हैं। 'मधुरम् वाक्यम्' (मीठे वचन) दर्शाता है कि उनके मन में राम के प्रति स्नेह और बढ़ गया है। जब शिष्य या भक्त सही मार्ग चुनता है, तो गुरु को सबसे अधिक प्रसन्नता होती है, भले ही उसका अर्थ गुरु के दिए उपहार को मना करना हो।
