Srimad Valmiki Ramayana
इमम् आश्रमम् आगम्य मृग संघा महीयसः ।
अहत्वा प्रतिगच्छन्ति लोभयित्वा अकुतोभयाः ॥ ॥३-७-१९॥
Imam āśramam āgamya mṛga saṃghā mahīyasaḥ । ahatvā pratigacchanti lobhayitvā akutobhayāḥ ॥ ॥3-7-19॥
Translation
"Large herds of deer come to this hermitage, and having tempted [us/you] and being fearless, they return without being killed."

"(परंतु यहाँ एक समस्या है) मृगों के बड़े-बड़े झुंड इस आश्रम में आते हैं और बिना मारे जाकर (हमें) ललचाते हैं, क्योंकि वे निर्भय हैं।"
English Commentary
The sage honestly points out the only drawback of his hermitage. Since it is a sanctuary of sages observing non-violence, the deer know they are safe ('akutobhayah' - fearless). They come in large herds and 'tempt' (lobhayitva) or disturb the residents before leaving unhurt. The temptation could be interpreted as a distraction to the ascetics or, more likely in the context of Rama, a temptation for a warrior/hunter to shoot them. The deer exploit the sages' non-violence. This verse sets up a conflict between the peaceful laws of the ashram and the natural instincts/duties of a warrior, foreshadowing why Rama might hesitate to stay.

ऋषि बहुत ईमानदारी से आश्रम की एकमात्र समस्या बताते हैं। चूँकि यह ऋषियों का आश्रम है, यहाँ हिंसा वर्जित है (अहिंसा परमो धर्मः)। मृग यह जानते हैं कि यहाँ उन्हें कोई नहीं मारेगा ('अकुतोभयाः' - निर्भय), इसलिए वे बेखौफ होकर घूमते हैं। 'लोभयित्वा' (ललचाकर) शब्द का अर्थ यहाँ गहरा है। संभवतः वे आश्रम की व्यवस्था बिगाड़ते हैं या तपस्वियों का ध्यान भंग करते हैं। या फिर, ऋषि राम को चेतावनी दे रहे हैं कि क्षत्रिय होने के नाते राम के लिए इतने सारे जानवरों को देखकर शिकार न करना कठिन होगा। यह श्लोक वन जीवन के यथार्थवादी संघर्ष को दिखाता है—जहाँ दयालुता कभी-कभी अव्यवस्था का कारण बन जाती है।
