Srimad Valmiki Ramayana
स निरीक्ष्य ततः धीरो रामम् धर्मभृताम् वरम् ।
समाश्लिष्य च बाहुभ्याम् इदम् वचनम् अब्रवीत् ॥ ॥३-७-८॥
Sa nirīkṣya tataḥ dhīro rāmam dharmabhṛtām varam । samāśliṣya ca bāhubhyām idam vacanam abravīt ॥ ॥3-7-8॥
Translation
Then, that wise sage, observing Rama, the best among the upholders of Dharma, embraced him with both arms and spoke these words.
हिंदी अनुवाद
तब उस धीर ऋषि ने धर्मधारियों में श्रेष्ठ राम को देखकर और दोनों भुजाओं से उनका आलिंगन करके यह वचन कहा।
English Commentary
The word 'nirikshya' (observing closely) is significant. Sutikshna recognized Rama not just visually but through spiritual insight. He identifies Rama as 'dharmabhritam varam' (the best among upholders of Dharma). The sage’s action of embracing Rama with both arms ('bahubhyam samashlishya') signifies immense affection and lack of inhibition. Ascetics often avoid physical contact, but here, the sage’s love transcends strict social boundaries. It represents the meeting of the devotee and the Divine, where the fruit of the sage’s penance stands before him. Despite being described as 'dhira' (steady/wise), the sage is moved to express physical affection upon seeing Rama.

ऋषि की प्रतिक्रिया में 'निरीक्ष्य' (ध्यान से देखकर) शब्द महत्वपूर्ण है। सुतीक्ष्ण ने राम को केवल आँखों से नहीं, बल्कि अपनी दिव्य दृष्टि से पहचाना। वे राम को 'धर्मभृताम् वरम्' (धर्म पालकों में श्रेष्ठ) के रूप में जानते हैं। ऋषि का 'बाहुभ्याम् समाश्लिष्य' (दोनों भुजाओं से आलिंगन करना) अत्यंत प्रेम और वात्सल्य का सूचक है। आमतौर पर ऋषि स्पर्श से बचते हैं, लेकिन यहाँ राम के प्रति उनका प्रेम नियमों से ऊपर है। यह भक्त और भगवान का मिलन भी है, जहाँ तपस्या का फल साक्षात् उपस्थित है। 'धीर' विशेषण ऋषि की स्थितप्रज्ञता को दर्शाता है, फिर भी वे राम को देखकर भावविभोर हो गए।
