Srimad Valmiki Ramayana
अयम् इक्ष्वाकु दायादो रामो नाम जनैः श्रुतः ।
तस्य एव अवरजम् विद्धि भ्रातरम् माम् च लक्ष्मणम् ॥ ॥३-७०-१३॥
Ayam ikṣvāku dāyādo rāmo nāma janaiḥ śrutaḥ । Tasya eva avarajam viddhi bhrātaram mām ca lakṣmaṇam ॥ ॥3-70-13॥
Translation
"This is the heir of the Ikshvakus, known by the people as Rama. And know me as his younger brother, Lakshmana."

"ये इक्ष्वाकु वंश के उत्तराधिकारी हैं, जो लोगों में 'राम' नाम से प्रसिद्ध हैं। और मुझे आप इनका छोटा भाई लक्ष्मण जानिये।"
English Commentary
Lakshmana begins the introduction with the lineage (Ikshvaku), which is the bedrock of their identity. The word dāyāda (heir/inheritor) emphasizes Rama's royal status. The phrase janaiḥ śrutaḥ (heard of by the people/famous) suggests that Rama's reputation is vast, perhaps implying that even a demon might have heard the name. Lakshmana introduces himself simply as the avarajam (younger born) of Rama, highlighting his humility and the fact that his identity is inextricably linked to his service and relationship to his brother.
