Srimad Valmiki Ramayana
मात्रा प्रतिहतो राज्ये रामः प्रवाजितो वनम् ।
मया सह चरति एष भार्यया च महत् वनम् ॥ ॥३-७०-१४॥
Mātrā pratihato rājye rāmaḥ pravājito vanam । Mayā saha carati eṣa bhāryayā ca mahat vanam ॥ ॥3-70-14॥
Translation
" obstructed in regards to the kingdom by his mother, Rama was exiled to the forest. He wanders this great forest with me and his wife."

"माता (कैकेयी) द्वारा राज्य (अभिषेक) में बाधा डालने पर राम वन में निर्वासित कर दिए गए। ये मेरे और अपनी पत्नी के साथ इस विशाल वन में विचरण कर रहे हैं।"
English Commentary
Lakshmana summarizes the tragedy of the Ayodhya Kanda with remarkable brevity. The phrase mātrā pratihato (obstructed by the mother) refers to Kaikeyi blocking Rama's coronation, though Lakshmana politely avoids using her specific name here. Pravājito implies exile or being sent forth. Lakshmana clarifies the composition of their group—Rama, his wife, and himself—wandering the mahat vanam (great forest). This context provides the demon with the "why" of their presence in such a dangerous place, framing them as exiled nobility rather than common hunters.

लक्ष्मण यहाँ बहुत संक्षेप में अयोध्या का पूरा घटनाक्रम बता देते हैं। 'मात्रा प्रतिहतो' (माता द्वारा रोके गए) शब्द में कैकेयी का उल्लेख है, यद्यपि लक्ष्मण ने उनका नाम नहीं लिया। यह दर्शाता है कि वे अब भी उस अन्याय को नहीं भूले हैं। 'प्रवाजितो' का अर्थ है संन्यासी की तरह या निर्वासन में भेजा जाना। लक्ष्मण यह स्पष्ट करते हैं कि राम अकेले नहीं हैं, बल्कि अपनी पत्नी और भाई के साथ धर्म का पालन करते हुए वनवास काट रहे हैं। यह कबन्ध को यह समझाने के लिए है कि वे राजकुमार होकर भी वन में क्यों भटक रहे हैं।
